ASTM A 193 Grade B16, is a standard that defines bolts and stud bolts operating under high temperature and high pressure. Made of alloy steel, these products are known for their ability to maintain their mechanical properties, especially at temperatures above 450°C. Compared to the standard B7 grade, it has a much higher resistance to loosening or deformation under extreme heat thanks to its Vanadium content. They are often used at the most critical points in power plants, steam boilers and refineries. ASTM A 193 B16 bolts are usually ASTM A 194 Grade 7 combined with heavy duty nuts (Heavy Hex Nut) to ensure full performance.

The main difference is temperature resistance. While grade B7 works efficiently up to about 425°C, B16 can operate at temperatures up to 593°C (1100°F) without destroying its structure thanks to its Vanadium content.
No, not recommended. Standard market washers (e.g. DIN 125) are made of mild steel and are crushed under the high tightening torque applied by the B16. Always use a hardened steel washer with this product. ASTM F436 (Hardened Washer) washers should be used.
The B16 standard was developed specifically for high temperature (500°C+) resistance. If the project will be used in very cold climatic conditions or cryogenic tanks (e.g. -100°C), B16 not recommended. High impact resistance for such cold environments ASTM A320 Grade L7 class should be preferred.
